What is a backlink?
A backlink is a link from another website to your site. Google sees this as a recommendation — provided the source is relevant and trustworthy.
Every incoming link to your website is a backlink. They vary enormously in value: a link from an industry trade journal carries far more weight than a hundred links from random link directories.
Key factors are relevance (does the site match your topic?), authority (is the site itself trusted?), and placement (in the text, with logical anchor text).

Why it matters
In competitive markets, authority is often the difference between position 8 and position 2. Without links, you rarely get past page two for commercial search terms.
Poor-quality links can do damage. Buying packages of hundreds of links is the quickest way to make your site look suspicious.
