Google's SEO guidelines: what you actually need to stick to
Google itself actually sets very few requirements: your pages need to be findable, load properly, not be misleading, and be made for people. These requirements are outlined in the Search Essentials. Rules about word counts or keyword density don't come from Google.
- The Search Essentials consist of three parts: technical requirements, spam policies, and guidelines for helpful content.
- There is no minimum word count and no ideal keyword density.
- Paid links, doorway pages, and automatically generated text that adds no unique value are classified as spam.
- Google itself says that the wrong SEO approach can harm your site.

Google publishes its requirements itself, in the Search Essentials. In short: your pages must be findable, load properly, contain no deception, and be made for people. Everything else circulated as a 'rule' is usually just someone's assumption.
The technical foundation is non-negotiable
Google needs to be able to reach your page (no block in robots.txt), index it (no accidental noindex), and see one clear version of each page (canonical properly set). If this goes wrong, no amount of copy will help.
What Google calls 'spam'
Bought links, doorway pages, automatically generated text without real value, and hidden keywords. This creates a short-lived bump in analytics tools followed by an expensive problem to fix. I don't do it, even if a client asks.
Rules that aren't rules
There is no mandatory word count, no ideal keyword density, and no fixed position for your keyword in the text. What does measurably work: a title that directly matches the search query, an opening paragraph with the direct answer, and headings that follow the reader's question.
How I tackle this in practice
First technical foundations and indexing, then the pages with the highest commercial value, then the rest. I explain what I've done at each step and what you can pick up yourself — often small copy adjustments that you can do faster than I can.

Step by step: check your site against the guidelines
Start with accessibility: make sure there are no blocks in robots.txt and no accidental noindex tags on pages you do want to show. Then, check in Google Search Console whether your most important pages have been indexed.
Next, check for a single version per page (canonical), working internal links, and page titles and descriptions that address the search query. Only after that does it make sense to work on copy.
The mistakes I see most often
A new website going live with the staging environment's noindex still active. Multiple pages tackling the same topic, diluting each other's impact. Copy packed with keywords that fails to answer the reader's question.
And the most dangerous one: buying backlink packages because it seems fast. That only delivers temporary metrics in tools, followed by an expensive recovery.
What Google does and doesn't ask for
| Commonly heard rule | What actually applies |
|---|---|
| Minimum of 800 words per page | Not a requirement; thoroughly answering the question is what matters |
| Keyword density of 2% | Does not exist as a guideline |
| As many backlinks as possible | Relevance and trustworthiness; paid links are spam |
| New content every month | Only useful if there is an actual search query behind it |
In brief
- 01
Technical foundation first
Accessible, indexable, one version per page.
- 02
Writing for people
Identify the search query and answer it directly.
- 03
No shortcuts
Spam tactics cost more in the long run than they deliver.
Frequently asked questions
Will I be penalised if I violate a guideline?
You could be. Google can demote pages or an entire site, or remove them from the index. You’ll see a notification in Search Console if there is a manual action.
Can I use AI to write content?
Google judges the end result, not how it was created. Automatically generated text that adds no unique value is spam; content reviewed and enriched with your own expertise is fine.
How do I know if my site complies?
Check indexation and notifications in Search Console, and go over the technical requirements. I check this for you in the free visibility scan.
How quickly will I see a difference after technical improvements?
Fixing indexation issues often makes a difference within weeks. Ranking for competitive keywords takes months.
