SEO specialist or SEO agency: which suits you best?

An independent specialist gives you direct contact with the person doing the work and is usually more cost-effective. An agency offers multiple disciplines under one roof. For most SMEs, the former carries more weight.

SEO specialist or SEO agency: which suits you best?

Choose an independent SEO specialist if you want direct contact with the expert working on your website, a clear monthly plan and a lower rate. Choose an agency if you need multiple disciplines simultaneously (SEO plus advertising plus development) or have a large, international website. For established SMEs with a single website, an independent specialist is usually the more effective choice.

  • With an independent specialist, the name on the website is the person doing the work.
  • Independent specialists usually start around € 400 to € 700 per month; agencies around € 800 to € 2.500.
  • An agency makes more sense for multiple disciplines, languages, or tens of thousands of pages.
  • With any provider: you remain the owner of your website, Search Console and tracking data.

On paper, a specialist and an agency do the exact same thing: improve your visibility. In practice, three things mainly differ: who you speak to, who does the work, and where your money goes.

This comparison is written by an independent specialist, so bear that perspective in mind — but you can verify the differences below with any provider before signing.

Difference 1: who do you speak to?

With an agency, contact often goes through an account manager who passes your wishes on to the specialists. With an independent specialist, you speak directly with the person handling your website. Questions are answered in hours rather than days, and nothing gets lost in translation.

That direct line also has a downside: if the specialist is ill or on holiday, work pauses for a moment. So always ask how they handle that.

Difference 2: who carries out the work?

With an agency, you don't always know who is working on your account; it could be a senior, but also a junior who is still learning. With an independent specialist, it is always the same person — the name on the website is the name at the controls.

Check with any provider: who writes the copy, who implements technical changes, and who sets the strategy? If you don't get specific names, that is an answer in itself.

Difference 3: where does your money go?

An agency has office overheads, account managers and margins: part of your monthly fee pays for organisational structure rather than actual work. An independent specialist doesn't have those layers, meaning the same budget buys more hours on your website.

That is why independent specialists typically start around € 400 to € 700 per month, whereas agencies start around € 800 to € 2.500 — for a comparable number of hours.

When is an agency a better fit after all?

An agency is the sensible choice if you need SEO, advertising, development and design all at once, if your website has tens of thousands of pages, or if you operate across multiple countries and languages. In those cases, a single point of contact backed by a team is more practical.

Also, if you are planning a complete rebranding or website migration soon, a full-service agency can streamline everything into a single schedule.

When is an independent specialist better?

For established SMEs with a single website and a clear target audience: you get senior-level expertise for a lower fee, shorter lines of communication, and someone who knows your site inside out because no one else touches it.

The risk — relying on a single person — is covered by clear agreements on ownership: you retain access to your website, Search Console, and all tracking data, and all work is documented.

The middle ground that is often overlooked

Some freelance specialists work with a small network of trusted professionals: a copywriter, a developer, a link building specialist. You keep a single point of contact, but with backup and extra hands whenever needed.

That is how Websucces Marketing works: Lubna determines the strategy and remains your point of contact; where needed, she brings in trusted professionals behind the scenes. You won't notice a thing, except that the work carries on.

Six questions that reveal the difference

Ask every provider the same six questions: how many hours a month do you spend on my website, who carries out the work, which three things do you do in the first month, how do you measure results, what happens in case of absence, and who owns the accounts and copy afterwards?

The answers are more important than the price. Anyone who gives specific answers to all six works with a plan. Anyone who defaults to vague terms about 'optimisation' and 'best practices' hasn't made that plan yet.

Why the first three months are decisive

In the first three months, you won't see much movement in rankings yet, but you will see exactly how someone works. Do you receive a detailed keyword and page plan, are technical errors actually resolved, and do you see new or rewritten pages go live? Then things are on track.

If it stops at an audit document and a monthly report with tool graphs, that won't change in month six either. Agree beforehand on what will be delivered in the first ninety days; that is the best protection against a year of standing still.

Switching from agency to specialist, without losing ground

Switching often goes wrong on the exact same point: access. Make sure you own your Google Search Console, Analytics, Google Business Profile, and your hosting before you cancel, and request a handover of completed work and acquired links.

Whenever someone switches to me, I always start with an inventory of what the previous party did: which pages were created, which links are in place, which redirects are running. Sometimes that turns out to be the cause of a drop, and cleaning it up is the quickest win.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is an independent SEO specialist reliable enough?

Check the same things you would with an agency: reviews, portfolio work, a concrete monthly plan, and clear agreements on account ownership. A Chamber of Commerce registration and availability outside office hours are part of that too.

What happens if the specialist falls ill?

Ask this upfront. Dedicated freelancers have an answer ready — in our case, a trusted network of professionals handles urgent matters and tracking keeps running uninterrupted.

Can I start small and scale up later?

Yes, and with a specialist that's often easier than with an agency. Start with a basic monthly package and scale up as soon as the first results show.

Why are agencies more expensive?

Not because the work is necessarily better, but because you're paying towards office space, account management, and profit margins. Always ask how many hours per month are actually spent on your website.

Can a specialist handle AI visibility (GEO) too?

That depends on the specialist. At Websucces Marketing, GEO — being cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity — is included as standard in every SEO package.
